I went to school in the seventies on the Aldershot border. Maybe 20~25% of the kids came from Army families (2 para, REME, RCT) but I don't remember as much focus on poppies etc as we have now. The parents were quite somber and didn't really talk about such stuff.

Did tax return yesterday and I've been lucky that I inherited part of my late parents house. It took a few years to sell and increased in value by about £20,000. The tax I paid on that was just shy of £4000 (24% after £3000 was deducted) I didn't earn this but paid less tax than the money I did.
