At the 12 second mark, that camera operator called an audible and just said "fuck it, the lane is clear, no tripping hazards, I'm winning a Sports Emmy for cinematography right now"

Thanks to
@shawnmicallef.bsky.social
for a much more optimistic look at e-scooters…The Star has not been kind to us in the past…lots of good stuff in here, but we just want to highlight a few things that we think would help steer the debate 🧵

Shawn Micallef: E-scooters are here to stay. It’s time for Toronto to act boldly
Currently Toronto’s position is, officially, “e-scooters are not permitted to be operated on public roads, sidewalks or paths,” yet it's easy to see people using them everyday, and they are

Another hit piece from the star on scooters. They seem to be churning them out at about once a month. This one about how injuries are increasing (no mention that ridership is, duh)…

Barbara is talking out of her ass here. Almost all e-scooters on the market have wheels bigger than the flanges on ttc streetcar tracks…mostly its kick scooters (for kids) that have smaller wheels…and the city can just add it to the bylaw…these roads require wheel size of X…

Wow, the city is acknowledging scooters! Baby steps…we like the idea of this program, but would also suggest the city start building midblock curb cuts - especially in bike lanes where stopping mid block can be dangerous…and lane facing premium parking which targets e-bikes, e-scooters and Vespas

This is not the same at all…only one of them is killing people on a regular basis on our streets…they are not just legal to sell, they are legal to use in almost every jurisdiction in the province except Toronto…Toronto is just slow at joining the pilot…completely different issue…

The worst kind of cyclist is one who can’t share the road with other mobility users…some would call this elitist, but it’s actually selfish…a lot of these folks are working and deserve to be safe, but a lot also can’t safely use pedals…

As we've said, city staff - including from the micromobility team - won't engage us on simple questions - like what are they asking the feds to further legislate before they are willing to re-explore the scooter issue...or why they believe a bylaw can't do what they are asking...

One of the things happening in Toronto is the escooter ban is pushing people into heavier no-pedal electric bikes (mopeds, Vespa’s and the cargo style e-bikes) which are less safe for pedestrians and cyclists…as they often try to use the bike lane…another indication of cycle advocacy gone wrong…

Toronto has an entire team working on a Micromobility strategy…but there is no direction from council to explore joining the E-scooter project at this time….we have the ability to augment the provinces definition of an escooter, why are they not working on doing so?

So tomorrow
@cycletoronto.bsky.social
is going to court to try to get the scooter lanes saved…we wish them luck…but we also need to point out that their argument that everyone deserves safe routes, is a bit hypocritical when they spoke against exactly that at council for e-scooters…

It’s right there…they can write the bylaw to do whatever they need, wheel size, speed, certifications and battery design, color, lighting, horns…whatever they want…but they are waiting for upper levels of government to regulate them…despite most of their concerns not being shared with other cities

Comments off! The problem of course is that there is nobody at the city responsible for scooters, and this isn’t about legality, it’s about the reality…we pay taxes, we deserve representation…the cycling community continues to gatekeep this, both in and out of city hall…

It’s sad that this entire report doesn’t mention scooter riders once…despite making up about 20% of all usage of scooter lanes…we also don’t seem to get any promotion of the value of our lives or safety…really disappointing, continuing failure of staff and councillors to acknowledge reality…

Remember folks, wear a helmet! (Also, risk is relative, this might seem dangerous to you and me, but it’s likely the least dangerous thing Danny Macaskill has done this year) - you can tell how maneuverable scooters are in this clip though, don’t let folks tell you otherwise…
