HL2 Trivia: During EP1 development, a "survival mode" had been prototyped. It's still in the code and works. In Ep 1 & 2 you can make per-map survival configs (control your loadout, restrict which items can spawn). Robin Walker once promised to "remind folks working on Ep3 about it" (link below).
