Long suspected the majority of deaths from natural disasters occur in the years afterwards due to ongoing health, wellbeing and economic impacts. We currently only count the immediate deaths and therefore hugely underestimate the impacts. Such important work as natural disasters increase.

Now that NOAA is no longer tracking billion-dollar weather disasters, rely on insurance broker Gallagher Re, who just released their list for the first half of 2025. So far, we are near the 10-year average. The CA wildfires ($65 billion) were the 8th-costliest weather disaster in world history.

Here in Central VIC we have already had an 8 month fire season. The AFAC forecast for winter isn't inspiring. As vol firefighters, we do get tired & each week it gets harder to gather a crew to get the truck out the door. This is the steady demoralising impact of climate change.
