Every linguistics student will learn in an intro class that multilingualism is more common in the world than monolingualism. For years I never had a proper citation for that claim, but I just read Blyth (1995) and found this! Yes, it's still logic rather than statistics, but it's something.

This semester's phonetics students did from-scratch documentation projects on an awesome variety of languages, including: Ilocano, Klallam, Bengali, Thai, Samoan, Tongan, ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi, Hakka, Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Palauan, Nepali, Vietnamese, Kibembe, Kape, and Boricua Spanish.

Made it to Singapore for #NWAVAP8! Walking around Orchard Road yesterday made me think of none other than Labov's famous Department Store study... each mall in the neighborhood caters to different social classes of shoppers, and the languages seen and heard in them reflects this.

The question of whether the US should or should not have an official language is uninteresting. Of actual concern: the recent EO is directly linked to an anti-immigrant, anti-education "English-only" movement which will add to the stigmatization of other languages and the people who speak them.

Andrew Cheng – Linguistics & Accent Perception @linguistandrew.bsky.social studies voice and accent perceptions in Honolulu’s linguistic landscape. He will examine whether varieties of English in Hawaiʻi are linked to ethnic and cultural backgrounds—and if this influences linguistic discrimination.

I've taught Labov's landmark studies in almost every single one of my courses, whether they are sociolinguistics courses or not. His legacy of contributions to linguistics and language studies is extraordinary. Rest in peace, #BillLabov.
