22 year old Americans converting to Catholicism, and then lecturing 80 year old European cradle Catholics on the 'heresies' of the current Pope and his predecessor, is absurdist comedy at it's best.

The pattern people in the progressive space must break (I include myself): I support Leader A; all teams except A are evil. A has disappointed me. I am transfering wholesale huge expectations overnight to B. I support Leader B; all teams except B, especially A, are evil. B has disappointed me, etc.

Incredibly dislikable man, largely driven by money and bottomless ambition, makes a play for voters who want to get back to the EU. It's nice to hear, but it's a bit like Francis Urquhart coming out in favour of universal basic income. š¬

Starmer's leadership has been marked by trying not to upset Brexit voters ā on Brexit itself, on immigration, on nastier manifestations of anti-immigration sentiment... perhaps even on Trump. The next Labour leader needs to stop/reverse all of that. Fire Mahmood as Home Secretary for starters.

There wouldn't be an approaching Labour leadership contest, if Starmer wasn't terrible and hadn't relied on appalling people better suited to the Tories or Reform, for policy. Burnham and Streeting are cynical tossers, but that doesn't make Starmer any more capable. He's still shit.

Pundits talking about rising UK GDP, while a third of kids are in poverty and families struggle to afford the basics. Biden kept talking about fantastic GDP, while many Americans were in dire poverty. We know where that led. Rising GDP figures do not reflect the reality for most Britons.

(He won't) I so wanted him to succeed. I really did. But radicalism was required after the Tory austerity that wrecked the country. Starmer doesn't have the imagination or courage to step beyond the status quo.

After 14 years of Tory austerity, radicalism was required from Labour to repair the damage. What we got was the bare minimum you would expect from a Labour government, a 'the status quo is pretty cool, actually' vibe and weird attempts to court pensionable fascists.

Keir Starmer is demonstrably crap, but masses of people doing a protest vote via Trumpian nincompoops who will remove all their local services while raising council tax and keeping the 'flags on everything' budget intact, says more about the electorate than the Labour leader.

Elderly people in my area have a serious Farage fetish. Many of them aren't well off and depend on their state pension and pension credit. How large amounts of people vote to make their own lives even worse, never ceases to amaze me.

Spanish air traffic controller here (civilian, but military ATCs coordinate with us). No plane is gonna enter our airspace without clearance to do so, less so land on Spanish airports (at least not peacefully). Cutting trade with Spain only pushes us toward other global markets, not good for the US.

Not so long ago, situations like this were eased by professional US diplomats, armed with proficiency in the local languages and vast amounts of knowledge on the region. Now, if Trump sends anybody at all, it'll likely be a 24yr old Reddit troll, who got a job with Trump by complimenting his hair.

I wish Starmer had been different. I wanted him to succeed. 14yrs of Tory rule (the latter half dominated by absolute chaos) wrecked the country. Radical solutions were required. A vision. A continuation of the status-quo with minor tweaks, accompanied by bizarre attempts to court fascists? Nope.

As discussed in here the problem with Labour attacking Reform and Greens as two sides of extremism is that Labour and Green voters are very similar in their views. And the big majority of Labour voters would be willing to join a coalition with Greens, when almost none would with Reform.

It's grim to contemplate, but part of Reform's vote will definitely have been made up of working class renters, who heard the 'we're going to shaft working people and renters' announcement from Reform, but still voted Reform regardless, because Farage promises to make the people they hate suffer.
