D&D mages should routinely disguise themselves as other classes. If people know about your spells, they'll target you first. So, it is best for the party if no one knows you're the mage until you're ready to unleash your killing blow.

Honestly this is one I've crowed on about quite a bit, especially in regards to horror campaigns You literally can't have a spooky and atmospheric horror games if the players refuse to elt themselves show fear/weakness
