There are games with the idea that the player characters are doomed — Mothership, Hunt, etc. Those are the exceptions, and I love APs on those kinds of games. I'm talking about games where failure is possible but not an expectation.

I want to be clear that there is no wrong answer here. Dimension 20 and Critical Role have famously allowed characters to defy death. If failure occurs, what are your plans for the bad ending? How do you make the possibility of failure interesting and fulfilling for the audience and the players?

I listen to a lot of Actual Play. Like more than I think people can imagine. Oftentimes, the player characters are the "winners," heroes of their story who emerge triumphant. We talk a lot about players accepting failure and utilizing it to push the narrative, but what about the GM?
