I keep asking for examples of good, non-Machine Learning AI technologies used in climate/environmental research. I understand why people are using AI instead of ML, but AI’s reputation is mixed at best so caveat emptor.

The plan for NSF is to demote its director to an advisory role to what a former senior figure compared to a Soviet political commissar. Also, greatly reduce the role of rotators from academic departments to consolidate administration power. This is a disaster for science and innovation.

there’s a lot of talk about big tech and corporations but so many international academic colleagues are also on H1Bs. no university is going to pay 100k extra a year to keep them. if this holds, it would essentially mean the end of foreigners on tenure track jobs at US universities.

When I was growing up in Chile, a magazine tried to publish, in 1987, a satirical drawing of Pinochet as Louis XIV. Pinochet had to allow some criticism, but mockery could not be tolerated. The agents of the state showed up to shut down the magazine and arrest the editor. We all saw the weakness.

Democratic lawmakers in California want the state to restore funding for scientific research that has been slashed by the Trump administration, creating an ambitious plan to use tens of billions of dollars in voter-approved bonds to fill the void.

Great to see for CA, but a reminder that federal agencies like NIH and NSF play a key role in funding research in small and poor states (e.g., EPSCoR). Another bad outcome of the federal cuts is scientific talent fleeing to the small number of states that can fill the national funding gaps.

I have just heard an ALARMING report that my former Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Nebraska is threatened with elimination, due to a university & state-wide budget crisis, and despite their ongoing success in scholarship and teaching. This is really shocking.

Trump admin planning to change student visas from lasting for duration of academic program to fixed 4-yr term, and then much harder to renew Could destroy US ability to attract global talent, particularly those seeking advanced degrees in STEM. The median time to complete a PhD is 5.7 yrs per NSF.

At least for STEM PhD programs, the only ways to get students through in 4 years would be to dramatically reduce what we require for graduation or move to a European-like model where students go straight to research, with no classes. The first seems unacceptable, and the second... unworkable.
