Imo, yes, you can tell a high-stakes story without those stakes being life or death, but the problem is that XIV keeps trying to tell stories with life-or-death stakes when we all know they're never going to opt for a death, making those specific stakes feel cheap.

I’m not staunchly against a Scion dying, but I don’t feel like I really need a familiar recurring character to be killed to understand the stakes of a narrative.
