A student asked me today if I’m ever upset when I’m grading homework and frankly it’s rare I’m ever not upset when I’m dealing with the vast majority of this work.

So much science is moving forward because grad students are taking on peer review that senior faculty are not interested in. And a nonzero amount of this is probably scientific malpractice since grad students don’t have as much experience finding paper red flags. We live in a society.

I just received a review that was really really mean but had a great info in it about how to improve my paper. It’s really hard to keep going back to that review to pull the important insights when I have to read between the lines. It’s an interesting dichotomy that academia can be so (un)helpful.
