It is very much worth a read/re-read. There's a serious way in which seeing that get published by NYT in that season felt like a real win (there is a funny side as well, if you know that Mariame famously doesn't like to write, even though she has released several more amazing books since then).

Always the same story

Maundy Thursday is a reminder that the same Jesus that lowered himself to wash feet, is the same Jesus invoked to celebrate the "deportation" of innocence to death camps. It's ironic that so many Christians will celebrate the resurrection of life this weekend while having worshipped death all week

Theology has a logical outcome

Any time I being up Nazis being a Christian movement, I always get someone saying "Hitler wasn't a Christian" as a means to discredit the statement. Christofascism isn't about being Christian, is about using Christian supremacy to gain power and carry out the logical conclusion of that theology.

If one thing is completely clear from the last week, it's that a large portion of our society will only challenge fascism after it harms the stock market. Evil is when people care more about the economy than violence against other humans.

Today is the 80th anniversary of the death of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. A man who is known for standing up to the same fascism we must stand against today.

Contrary to what the president thinks, supporting, affirming, and seeking care for you trans child is love, not abuse. Abuse would be using your position of power to target, harass, and harm children.

When you try to justify your actions, but just dig a bigger hole

Those who support oppression do not have to speak about it when they hold the power. They can just have their leaders speak and watch harm grow. Those who oppose oppression can choose silence and still personally oppose the harm. But, in doing so, they speak the same words as those who support it.

Maybe the evil part isn't the profanity?

If we cannot speak out without punching down on marginalized groups, we should choose to not speak. Comparing politicians to children, using the r slur, or whatever, we are saying they are on the level of that marginalized group and that group is not worthy of dignity, respect, or equality.

Paid to protest?

If all we needed was better translations of the Bible or correct theological interpretation, things would be easy. Unfortunately, ideology determines theology and ideology is much more difficult to change.
