Baroness Harman KC, who is writing the independent report into bullying and harassment, said you can be on the side of progress or pick reasons not to be. Having spoken to Bar leaders, Harriet said it’s clear that the desire to change is not “performative” - “time’s up” on this behaviour.

At our session on evolving the culture at the Bar we’re discussing bullying and harassment and the upcoming report. @leonkazakos.bsky.social said Bar leaders all have a duty to be reflective of their style and set the tone. He urged everyone: “don’t be a bystander”.

Our first session ‘justice under review’ is off to a start. Overall the panel are optimistic that change is on the horizon for justice with Vice Chair Kirsty Brimelow KC noting that the Gauke and Leveson reviews demonstrate joined up thinking.

Kirsty closed the session by saying the government needs to get a hold of misinformation which causes a loss of trust amongst the public, because “we need a system that the public trusts”. She added that barristers need to be seen as key workers as they were during the pandemic.

The Lady Chief Justice Baroness Carr explains it has been a challenging period for the rule of law … there has been "unprecedented abuse, unfair and inaccurate criticism" of judges and she thanked the Bar Council for speaking out in support of the independence of the judiciary.
