Online right-wing rhetoric began shifting last night from saying the left-wing must be destroyed because someone on the left supposedly killed Charlie Kirk to saying the left-wing must be destroyed because there were people on the left who celebrated his death. In case anyone was wondering.

If this guy from a gun loving Republican family concluded at some point, according to one alleged piece of evidence that Kirk was “filled with hate,” he came to that conclusion AS AN INDIVIDUAL, and people who support the Democratic Party have NOTHING TO DO WITH IT, you scumbags.

People from across the political spectrum need to join together to condemn political violence, no matter who the target it is. It’s never acceptable.

We don’t yet know what motivated the person who shot and killed Charlie Kirk, but this kind of despicable violence has no place in our democracy. Michelle and I will be praying for Charlie’s family tonight, especially his wife Erika and their two young children.

I am deeply disturbed by the shooting in Utah. Doug and I send our prayers to Charlie Kirk and his family. Let me be clear: Political violence has no place in America. I condemn this act, and we all must work together to ensure this does not lead to more violence.

My main observation from the last few hours of monitoring US social media is that Democrats are universally denouncing political violence and calling for calm while MAGA are escalating language and openly lusting for retribution against broad categories of people they identity as their enemies.

Before knowing all the facts, voices on the right are now exploiting the tragic death of Charlie Kirk & calling for all-out war on the left. This is sad, but not surprising, at a time when we should all be denouncing political violence. They were not so upset when Minn. Democrats were assassinated.

We must stand resolutely against political assassination and political violence of all kinds, and just as resolutely against everyone who exploits acts of violence as the pretext or excuse for political repression of political opponents.
