Storm update: A flux rope arrived at 10:20 UTC, raising the magnetic field strength to currently 23 nT. For now, Bz remains positive. Rooting for a low-inclination, left-handed flux rope — that could flip Bz southward and boost #aurora chances again! ✨🤞 Stay tuned!

This cluster of ☀️ active regions, with sunspots showing magnetic fields in the SDO image on the left, is rotating towards Earth 🌍 in the coming week. While the sunspot number (from SIDC Belgium, right image) made a dip in the last few months, some elevated solar activity could now be coming up. 👇

We have updated spacecraft mission trajectory movies for @esa.int Solar Orbiter, BepiColombo and NASA Parker Solar Probe, for the whole decade 2020 to 2030. ☀️ We have a new paper out—work led by @drbjl.bsky.social: We analysed a simulated CME via synthetic (remote-sensing and in-situ) observations, incl. Parker Solar Probe-like encounters close to 10 Rs and WISPR imaging. We reproduced many features found in real data. ApJS link: doi.org/10.3847/1538...

As the geomagnetic storm is subsiding, some more super nice #aurora pictures from Hubert Krapfl from Austria (Styria, oberes Murtal), 2025 Jan 1 18:40 CET.

Central Europe, if there are no clouds in your area, watch out for #aurora tonight! The 4th strongest geomagnetic storm in cycle 25 as measured by Dst is ongoing and likely persisting into the night. A #solarstorm magnetic rope with a very favorable west-south-east configuration sweeps over Earth.
