It is unclear at the moment whether #aurora will also be visible at mid-latitudes in the the coming night from Tue Jan 20 to Wed Jan 21. The storm is slowly subsiding though, sustained only by high speed wind (800 km/s) and small Bz <0, with a magnitude of only around -8 nT.

Earth has largely exited the #solarstorm but the geomagnetic storm is still ongoing as there is high speed solar wind and magnetic field Bz < 0 in the back of the storm. The geomagnetic Dst index is now -235 nT which finally makes it the 3rd strongest storm of this cycle in terms of Dst.

As crazy as it sounds, in terms of Dst this is only the 6th strongest geomagnetic storm of solar cycle 25 so far (min -169 nT currently, might go down a bit more). Although it was the fastest and strongest in terms of solar wind magnetic field, the field orientation Bz >0 was actually not favorable!

The @esa.int Solar Orbiter data allow us to see what will happen! SolO already observed the full #solarstorm, as it is at 0.74 au and near the Sun-Earth line. At SolO the shock arrived at 12 UT, at L1 at 19 UT. As the storm lasted ~10 hours at SolO, it will go on at least until Jan 20 ~5 UT near 🌍.

Amazing data in real time from the @esa.int #SolarOrbiter magnetometer @imperialcollegeldn.bsky.social show that this storm will keep its main Bz > 0 field and its total field will decline, resulting in a West-North-East (WNE) flux rope. At the end there should be an interval Bz < 0 (=more aurora!)

This is likely the strongest near-Earth #solarwind magnetic field I have ever seen in my career - 90.6 nT total field, and perfectly northward 61.7 nT Bz component. If this is the main flux rope, the north and west pointing field is consistent with the right handed source region - Bz would stay > 0!

#solarstorm update - a strong shock (likely flank hit) has arrived at Earth around 7 PM UT 💥 Real-time solar wind data for plasma temperature/speed at L1 is currently unrealiable, but modeling suggests an arrival speed of about 1000 km/s. Bt is currently around 30 nT, Bz is intermittently negative.

Initial parameters are now available for the #solarstorm associated with yesterday’s X1.9-class flare ☀️ Estimates confirm that the storm is propagating slightly eastward. With an initial speed of 1650 km/s, our model predicts the storm’s arrival to be on Tuesday, January 20th around 02:46 ± 5.33 UT.

A ☀️ X1.9 flare peaked at 18:09 UT 18 Jan 2026 at about 20 degrees east and 10 degrees south of disk center, the GOES CCOR-1 coronagraph already sees a solar storm erupting (known as a "halo" CME). We will send out updates for 🌍 arrival time forecasts once the CME speed/direction are available.

Here are the first 2026 #solarstorms to watch - there were two eruptions towards Earth in longitude on Thursday January 8, but they are quite southward directed, they could be deflected by coronal holes. There is a much bigger storm in between the 2, but this is directed to the backside of the Sun!👇

Here is todays Nov 14 #solarstorm (NOT Earth directed 🙃) in its full glory - it has one super interesting feature concerning future #spaceweather missions! Guess which 🤔 First the solar source as imaged in extreme ultraviolet by NASA/SDO:

The coronagraph CCOR-1 already sees the solar storm from the ongoing flare X4 flare (peak Friday Nov 14 2025 8:30 UT), however the active region is quite far away at west 60° so only a glancing blow is expected at Earth. The Kanzelhöhe Observatory @uni-graz.at imaged the flare too!

With nighttime images (NOAA-21 / VIIRS) obtained through NASA worldview the southern auroral boundary can be seen for 2025 November 12 and 13, however, note that the red #aurora that many people see at mid latitudes (central Europe, southern USA) is not visible here. worldview.earthdata.nasa.gov

During the night the expected #solarstorm arrived in full, with a speed of almost 1000 km/s which matched the predicted speed very well! The Dst index was not pushed below the previous night during the arrival of a left handed, low inclination North-West-South magnetic flux rope in the storm's core.

Fairly as anticipated, on Wed Nov 12 2025 18:53 UT the shock arrived from the X5 flare #solarstorm from Tue Nov 11! At 40 nT and ~ 900 km/s in the sheath, it has a strong potential for a prolongement of the ongoing geomagnetic storm (-118 nT Dst). Happy #aurora hunting at high- and mid latitudes!

A shock arrived Nov 12 7:32 UT at Solar Orbiter, from the early Tue Nov 11 X5 flare #solarstorm. Reminder: SolO is at 17.5° east, 10.3° north of Earth, 0.83 au, so our forecast should be taken with a grain of salt as its quite a bit away from the Sun Earth-line - it will not fully match L1 data.

Resulting in a massive maximum total magnetic field of 63 nT, presumably the #solarstorm from Monday morning arrived 2025 Nov 11 23:38 at L1, and interacted with the previous storm just before it arrived at the L1 point near Earth. Dst reached - 238 nT, which is the 3rd strongest storm of this cycle

The @esa.int Solar Orbiter spacecraft was impacted by a #solarstorm! We think it was the one that erupted on early Mon Nov 10. We model its arrival at Nov 12 ~2:30 UT at L1, with the previous one from Sun Nov 9 showing up with only a small signature here. The X5 flare storm is due tomorrow at SolO!

The #solarstorm from the X5 flare on Tue Nov 11 has an initial speed of 1800 km/s. We model it to arrive at Earth on Wed Nov 12 18:24 CET ± 6 hours (ELEvo method). The night from Wednesday to Thursday now looks better in terms of #aurora, and if the storm is strong maybe GNSS errors are possible.

The SOHO LASCO instrument is drowned in solar energetic particles due to the X5 flare earlier today Nov 11. A bit west of the disk center the particles are magnetically well connected to Earth. A massive #solarstorm was produced which we will model once initial conditions are available.

We just got an X5 flare from the same active region that launched the 2 #solarstorms earlier this week, at around 20 degrees north and west of disk center. We will again need to see whether a storm was launched with coronagraphs and then evaluate its potential arrival at Earth in the upcoming days.

The source region of both #solarstorms, one from early Sunday Nov 9, and the other from early Monday Nov 10, are (as usual) complex. Judging from the main neutral line, where the +/white, and -/black magnetic fields meet, we may expect a magnetic field rotation as south-east-north (SEN) or ENW.

We are waiting for the arrival of both #solarstorms at the @esa.int #SolarOrbiter spacecraft. Its magnetometer could measure their internal magnetic field which can improve our forecasts. It is a bit away from the Sun-Earth line at 10° north / 18° west but at a good distance of 0.83 au from the ☀️ 👇

Another #solarstorm is approaching Earth 🌍 It's associated with an X1.2-class solar flare, again from active region AR 14274 (same as the CME predicted to arrive late tomorrow). It has an estimated initial speed of 1208 km/s - expected arrival is Wednesday, November 12th around 02:47 ± 5.67 UTC.

A #solarstorm with an initial speed of ~730 km/s is on its way toward Earth! It’s associated with an X1.7-class flare that peaked today around 07:35 UTC. The CME is expected to arrive Tuesday, 11 November, around 20:00 UTC (21:00 CET). Let’s hope for a better aurora show than on Friday🤞🌌

#solarstorm update 💥 - the CME predicted to arrive early Friday, November 7th seems to have impacted L1 around 04:51 UTC today - speed around 793 km/s, Bz initially northward with strength around 13 nT and currently at -7 nT
