The problem with Gen A.I., and LLMs in particular, is reliability. A tool that can produce text - business reports, code, legal documents, patient summaries - 100x faster than a human is a boost *only* if a human doesn't need to check and correct it. It has one use case: text that doesn't matter.

You might have heard AI boosters say: "it's okay that this tech is wrong half of the time, because the human operator 'partnering' with the LLM will catch errors." Except no they fucking won't. The actual context in which these systems are deployed make checking the AI's "work" impossible.

The tendency to credit GenAI efforts with the success of ML in much more specific (and appropriate) contexts to justify increasing emissions for AI slop generation is something to behold.
