In a few weeks I’ll be giving one of this year’s Ihaka Lectures. This is a big honor for me, I have to say, as I’ve has benefitted so much from R and learned so much from its community of developers and users over the years. Finally, we've laid a foundation for raster, Zarr, and ND-array functionality primarily by GDAL! SedonaDB 0.4.0 includes basic metadata and load operations, and we're exited to build on this with the community for our next release.

We're excited to announce a new release of SedonaDB, and this one is a big one! Between native DataFrame APIs in Python and R, a brand new Geography implementation, GPU accelerated joins, and a raster/ND-array foundation, it's hard to know where to start.

Had a very similar experience recently: bsky.app/profile/nren... (Seems the easiest way to get packages onto CRAN is to have minimal documentation, no unit tests, and no obvious way to report bugs, which is the opposite of what I want in a reviewed/checked package)

@tylermw.com's skymodelr package is so rad. So incredible what we can do with just a bit of #rstats code in 2026. Made myself a lovely new macOS Dynamic Wallpaper with skymodelr and the (also great) equinoxmac.com app.

if anyone in R or Python ever thought "gee I'd like to contribute to GDAL", I'm here to help you get started can guide you through good approaches, what to think about, and what's bare minimum for a bug fix or feature PR, and the python and C++ tooling you will need (speaking linux)

gdal is at least an order of magnitude faster than R. I will remember that from now on.
