I always recommend checking the undersides of leaves and where the leaves meet then stems of your outdoor plants now and then. It's usually the first place you'll find lil jerks like aphids. Easier to manage if you catch it early.

Artists have been using photo references for as long as photography was accessible. There's no shame in it. I went to the Mucha museum and they had the reference photos he took for his paintings next to his paintings, it was super cool. I take photos anytime I hike or travel for my art.
