New paper with @glenpeters.bsky.social in Nature Communications today. We show how models and studies with a lot of scenarios in the IPCC scenarios database have a large impact on key findings, including emissions reductions, net-zero GHG year, and coal, gas, and oil consistent with 1.5°C.

We analyse 35 global indicators from 2000-2022. Median results show slow progress in ending human deprivation, which must *speed up fivefold* to meet global goals by 2030, while rapid ecological damage must *reverse at nearly twice the current pace* to safeguard a stable planet by mid-century. 2/

We disaggregate the global results into country clusters by income. Median results show the richest 20% of countries (home to 15% of people) are responsible for over 40% of ecological overshoot in 2017, while the poorest 40% (home to 42% of people) experience more than 60% of global deprivation. 3/

Es gehört zu den Phänomenen, die wir in ein paar Jahren unseren Kindern erklären müssen, wie wir die Klimakatastrophe augenblicklich vergessen, wenn es mal regnet oder uns gerade keine nervige Gruppe massiv störend daran erinnert, dass wir einfach nicht umhinkommen, uns damit beschäftigen zu müssen.

Die hier beklagte Dekadenz wirkt auch gegen ambitionierte Klimapolitik. Wir haben dort nicht nur Regierungsversagen sondern Gesellschaftsversagen: große Mehrheiten verhindern, was längst notwendig wäre. Würde die Regierung es trotzdem tun: FPÖ & AfD wären weit über 40%. So scheitern Zivilisationen.

Autofahrer fragen entgeistert, warum sie den ÖPNV mitfinanzieren sollten, obwohl sie ihn gar nicht nutzen, während gleichzeitig wir alle ihre Parkplätze, Straßen, Unfälle, ihre Luft- und Lärmverschmutzung & ihre Klimaschäden laut Studien mit jährlich 5000€ pro Auto subventionieren und ertragen muss.

Seit 2015 gibt es die SDGs - und sie wirken (nur in die falsche Richtung 😂😪). Anekdote am Rande: Damals bin ich auf Einladung der UN noch nach New York geflogen, um ihnen zu sagen, dass sie ein totes Pferd reiten. Würde ich nicht mehr machen (nicht nur weil ich seit Jahren nicht mehr fliege...).
