Global Sea Surface Temperatures have reached the pre-2023 record daily high two weeks earlier than during the 2016 Super El Niño! While La Niña is just ending. I'm afraid my extrapolation of this ANNUAL average ending up higher than the pre-2023 DAILY record could come true...

If Sea surface Temperatures develop in a similar fashion as during the 2023 El Niño year, the annual average will be higher than the daily Super El Niño peak of 2016! This is a simple projection, but based on the @mercatorocean.bsky.social Ocean Heat Content (OHC) estimate, it is quite possible.

Greenhouse gases absorb heat radiation, causing more heat to accumulate in the oceans and lower atmosphere (the troposphere). But the higher layers of the atmosphere cool down. This will continue until a new Earth's Energy Imbalance is reached with the greenhouse gas forcing. By @edhawkins.org:

The Relative Oceanic Niño Index (RONI) is now the new standard. This @noaa.gov NCPC update clearly shows that most of the past 6 years showed a negative RONI. The average RONI of the past 6 years was -0.54, contributing to relatively lower global temperatures.

Based on these NASA CERES and geodetic (=gravity) satellites based observations and comparison to CMIP6 models, I think @simonoxfphys.com falsely portrayed 3°C as an 'intentionally scaring, illegitimate 'doomer' scenario'. It's a substantial risk, which we have the (moral) obligation to communicate

As Zeke mentioned, the @drjamesehansen.bsky.social et al. (not just Hansen, but incl. many world leading experts) is based on (mainly NASA CERES satellite) observations rather than models. Therefore I don't understand Zeke's comment that 'there's not much supporting evidence for that'.

🌊🌡📈 Natural variability exists, but Global Sea Surface Temperatures being already above pre-2023 records and the daily anomaly now being 0.15°C higher than in 2023 worry me a lot. Especially with the main El Niño region still at -0.57°C... Global warming has accelerated!

Another insightful visualization of when we could reach daily, monthly and annual temperature marks if the warming acceleration continues (not a prediction, but not impossible either). Rees is great a putting a lot of information on a (relatively) comprehensible single graph!
