Starlings leaving their roost at NCW 7/12/25 - great spectacle

About 80,000 Starlings leaving their Reed-bed roost early this morning

Goosander have been hard to see at NCW this year so a party of three today, these two and a female were welcome. Apparently the immature is this year’s bird - I am surprised how advanced it is.

Red crested Pochard at NCW today. This bird hides well on Crosslands Lake.

This Jack Snipe was found on our reserve using a thermal imaging camera. Great to see and record it without disturbance.

One of the eight Whooper Swans that came into Crosslands Lake, NCW today was ringed in Iceland in August. Fantastic to be able to get instant feedback like this.

Yearlist to end of October 2025 at North Cave Wetlands stands at 164 species with new birds for the month shown in Red.. The most unexpected bird of the month and also a new species for the reserve was a Hoopoe that flew over the Viewing Platform on the 3rd. @northcavewet.bsky.social

Pectoral Sandpiper at Easington Lagoons- it showed well today.

You know when people say record shot and it’s no such thing? Well not in this case, but I am so pleased that NCW finally scored Glossy Ibis today that I wanted to post this shot.

The people on site first thing were lucky to get good views of the Night Heron at North Cave Wetlands. Shortly after this it flew into vegetation and wasn’t see again up to 14:30.

It’s been a bit quiet on the wader front at NCW so two beautiful Wood Sandpipers today were very welcome.

Two years ago avian flu ripped through our reserve, we lost many Black headed Gulls and all Mediterranean Gulls, so it’s great to see at least 7 juveniles (3 families), this year. NCW, East Yorkshire.

It was hard to catch up with Whimbrels at NCW last year so it is good that there seems to be a few birds on the reserve regularly. These two from 5/5/25

Surely the best dabbling duck? Drake Garganey at NCW 3/5/25 - seems to have been an influx today.

Three new birds for the year at NCW today. Only photo is of the delightful Yellow Wagtail, a Sedge Warbler sang from deep in a bush. Best of all 4 Common Cranes flew over very distantly. Thanks to tip off from Alkborough for the latter.

A horrible wet and grey day at NCW today. Notable birds at a premium but I enjoyed seeing this striking leucistic Black headed Gull and 2 Golden Plovers (1 shown)

I have seen very few Woodcock on the deck but atm up to four are showing brilliantly at NCW East Yorkshire

Red Kites used to just pass over North Cave Wetlands reserve but over the last few weeks they have taken to landing in trees in groups of up to five. This one was quite low down.

First Pintail of the year at NCW was a delight today

Black and Red Grouse in a wintry North Yorkshire today. Blacks much more difficult to see than last couple of years today.

I don’t see many Purple Sandpipers so it was nice to see this one in a group of 8 at Bridlington today. You are a bit on top of them though as can be seen by the photo.

I know the Redpolls have been lumped and there are other lumps mooted e.g. Teal/GW Teal but can anyone point me to a definitive list of agreed changes please?
