We started letting our oldest stay home alone but we needed a way to contact her and we don't want her having a cellphone til high school. So I decided to go old school and found a (brand new!) rotary phone from the 60s on eBay and rigged it up to VoIP. Forgot how loud the ringers on these are!

Finished reading Cahokia Jazz by Francis Spufford. Can not rave enough about this book, great mystery, crime thriller stuff + some of the most fascinating alt history worldbuilding I've ever come across. The second book of his I've read and I am fully sold on reading anything he puts out

Really enjoying shooting Kentmere 200, solid results from a relatively cheap film. A few from the last roll I finished.

Got a new phone over the weekend. First time back to iPhone in almost a decade - taking a bit of getting used to but ok so far. I did 3D print a little charging dock for my desk and that's pretty fun so far.

The first time I ever heard the phrasie "Tankies" was right around the time that "Bronies" were a thing and my initial thought was that it was a term for adult fans of Thomas the Tank Engine and I wish I had never learned otherwise

I guess I missed Alien Day by a few hours, but I had a photo assignment to shoot "an iconic silhouette" and this is my submission. Built a little set with a 3D printer and made this. Shot on 4x5 sheet film.

Spent the weekend learning how to shoot wet plate tintypes photographs. Probably not something I'll do on my own - too much cumbersome gear and toxic chemistry - but a really fun experience that I've wanted to try for a while now.

Found this very old, very much broken, typewriter. Decided it might make for some decent photos. The blurry one is with the old projector lens I've been experimenting with. Graflex Speed Graphic / Fomapan 100

Watched the first few episodes of this Young Sherlock series and it's really solid. Also, the lead is apparently Ralph Feinnes nephew which also helped me rediscover that their family name is the most absurdly British name "Twisleton-Wickeham-Feinnes"

New camera day... somehow snagged this 1954 Rolleiflex for <$300. It came in today and works perfectly and barely has a scratch on it. I can't wait to get out and shoot this thing.

Took a gamble on an unidentified old brass lens on eBay and pretty happy with it. It's off of a very early movie projector - probably 1915-1920. Took a couple of test shots with my Graflex and some sheets of xray film and dig the results.

Took a few weeks of tinkering, but I think I have put together a solid process for shooting and developing these dry plate tintypes using flash indoors. Also happy I somehow am mostly in focus considering this was a self-portrait shot wide open on a 4x5

Shot this on dry glass plate mostly to test if I could use flash to expose these. Turns out you can, but it needed 5 full power bursts from a pair of 600 Watt strobes about 2 feet away. I do like the weird misty effect it created though.

Second try at shooting a tintype (this time a self portrait) was more of a success. It was mostly flawless until some of the emulsion began to pull away during the drying process. But it's definitely an improvement over the first go.

First try shooting a tintype and I'm calling this a semi-success. It's underexposed or underdeveloped and leaning towards the latter. Need to get the chemistry dialed in (and rinse this with photoflo because it's a dust magnet)
