“AI” isn’t a tool or technology or even a cluster of technologies with a misleading name. It’s the infrastructure at the foundation of a form of capitalism dependent on data brokering. We should be teaching our students about this and not teaching them about “responsible” use.

It is still on the broad/vague side because I started approximately 3 seconds ago, but I will try to be more involved on this platform and would love to connect with anyone working with similar themes, or on anything water/river/waste-related in London!

I will be building on themes from my PhD (queer theory, environmental humanities, monsters and subterranean horror) to go beyond sewers as purely technical infrastructures, approaching them as urban heritage, examining our entanglements with waste and other non-humans in the "sewer ecology."

Anyway, the guy seems like a good dude, but it’s interesting to watch someone realize what faculty do in real time. His latest TikTok is about how he explained that he’s OK with AI in the classroom as long as students use it for brainstorming. I can’t wait till he gets to his first grading session

- he also is backtracking on how he used to be jealous about how faculty members weren’t on campus all the time. He said I only taught two classes and now I’m exhausted. It’s like “performing.” Not to mention all of the prep time before and the grading after that happens off campus sometimes.

He’s two weeks in. And here are his observations: - he never understood why faculty members would want to switch classrooms. Now he does. He now sees how one classroom can be amazing and another one can just be a shit storm that ruins your teaching.

- he is amazed that he gets so many emails from students after “work hours.” And he is a little frustrated about how students don’t tell him what class they’re in when asking for specific information. He’s also a little confused at how students seem to think all of their emails are urgent.

He said that he was looking forward to having fewer emails, to not being chained to a desk all day, and to not be on campus as much. He was genuinely excited about being in the classroom (yay!) but also excited about a lighter workload
