The issue I have with "Labour must appeal to the centre for the left to win the election" takes is really quite simple - it assumes Labour have knowledge about who centre voters are and what appeals to them.

If Hipkins wants to fuck around with ruling things in/out then the Greens should reciprocate. Rule out working with Hipkins. Not Labour, just Hipkins. Make it clear he is a dead end politically for this bullshit where he thinks he gets to dictate and not negotiate based on electoral outcomes.

This is a great example of how the ratchet effect in politics works. Hipkins committing to leaving some of National/NZ First/Acts policy in place, maybe tweaks in some places. But there is absolutely no commitment from the other side to do the same.

Thinking about NZ's civil union act from 2004 and then the attempt to legislate marriage as between a man and a woman in 2005. Can't help but feel some parallels with self ID and the current nonsense from NZ First/Act/National.

I will believe there is a ceasefire when Iran comes out and says there is.
