Miles Morales is a great Christmas game btw. If you've played it before you can blast through the main story in 8-9 hours and there's decorations and snow through the whole thing. Also it's really sweet, it's about loving and protecting your community.

Once again, ILL remains the purest representation of scholarly community. I use it so much I often write little notes back and forth with the librarians when I’ve borrowed a lot from their library. It’s the closest you can get to those old penpal schemes and I love it.

Podcasts and "deep dive" media will try to convince you that you *now* know things, thanks to them. A PhD, especially one with archival, observational, or observational components, will definitely convince you that you know next to nothing, thanks to the available resources & one's predecessors.

I’m over here trying to enjoy PSLF and this comes across my screen. Sigh. IGN claims his classes are “a world first.” FIRST TIME IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD, EVERYONE!!!! NEVER BEEN DONE BY ANYONE EVER!!!! Meanwhile, I and many others have been doing this for a decade or more.

I know things are tough all around, but this is a glorious morning for one Bob Whitaker. 120 out of 120! Public Service Loan Forgiveness secured. So relieved.

Historians (rightly) get annoyed when other academics weigh in on their subject & claim to have “solved” or “completed” history, ignoring existing research & nuance. Yet historians keep weighing in on games as if no one has ever paid attention to them before (& it’s not great)

In Our Time is one of the greatest creations in broadcast history. I mean that without any trace of hyperbole.

We need a film depicting the process where the historian uses Google Scholar, clicks on the desired article, finds that it is paywalled, goes to uni library website, logs in, goes back to article page again, downloads PDF into a folder with 500 other unread PDFs, and repeats the process for 120 min.

Best book on WSC and the SWW

I spend a lot of time talking about all the things historical games do wrong when representing (or, mostly, not representing) women in the past - for a change, here I wrote about some games which I think do something better and more interesting in their depictions of historical women & girls!

If Fallout can work on TV, the New Order series certainly can too. And, of course, this game series has great politics.

I spent A LOT of time this week responding to emails about my negative review of Red Dead's History. I thought I would be done by now...but then the American Historical Association sent out this newsletter this morning on teaching recommendations for the upcoming semester. And guess who's there?

They had this inspiring documentary about how in 2005, artist Zheng Guogu began constructing Liao Garden, a 20,000 square metre garden studio in Yangjiang, based on the classic RTS Age of Empires. Last month I traveled to the LBJ Library for the educator institute on historical memory and war. I presented on History and Games for an amazing body of K-12 educators. The pics are up and they are amazing. You can't even tell it's 1000 degrees and I'm sweating through my clothes (back row, left).

I wrote something new for History Respawned today. It's a review of a new book about Red Dead, but it's really about academic writing and historical game studies as a field. Please read, but also know, I really really really really REALLY didn't want to write this review.
