Our older son turned 13 today, so we are now the parents of a teenager. We feel too young to have a kid this old, but as we barrel through our mid-40s, I think it's probably time to stop thinking that way. The time dilation effect of watching children grow continues to increase.

People bombarding me with "why do you care if Liquid Glass sucks or doesn't!" seem to forget or not realize it is LITERALLY MY JOB TO CARE. It is my business. I have made my living for the past 16 years building apps for people and clients on these platforms. I am also a user of these platforms.

Think about how many collective millions of dollars in time and effort have been spent by developers and designers to try to adopt Liquid Glass in the past year, only to have Apple start to walk it back on the very first minor release since launch. This is an admission, and embarrassing.

Just a quick note that while work is on-going to bring Breathable into the world of OSes 26, I've just released version 3.0.2, a compatibility update to ensure things continue to function properly in the meantime. breathable.app

One thing I've been thinking about a lot since writing this is that we just finally got into a good spot with iOS UI/UX. It took nearly a decade for the drastic over-correction of iOS 7 to smooth out and be refined, to find middle ground again. And so of course Apple throws a grenade in the room.

Been told (rightly so) in the past that I tend to be pessimistic in my takes on UI changes, but I should preface this that my gut reaction to iOS 7 was horror—and it proved correct in the long-run. So, about Liquid Glass: It's a giant mess and quite bad. Looks okay in a show reel, but bad in use.

Today is Karbon's 15-year anniversary. Astounded, proud, honored and thankful. Can't believe I've gotten to run this little amazing company for most of my adult life. There have been challenging times, but it's still a dream to show up to work every day and build stuff with this team.

Apple is featuring Breathable in several spots in the Mac App Store ("Best New Apps and Updates" and "Try These Mac Favorites"). Thanks for all the support and reshares and kind messages, everyone! Free or not, I've never had an app hit #1 in its category on the Mac App Store before. 🤯

Breathable will also be available in the EU again shortly. I removed it from sale there over the summer because of the terrible trader self-doxxing rules Apple was forced to implement, but now that it's free I can bring it back. Should propagate within a few hours.

In light of the awful fires and air quality in Los Angeles, I've made Breathable free and app will remain free permanently. I charged for the app prior only so I could donate the proceeds to climate change charities, but paying Apple 15% for that privilege is silly.

Someone in our neighborhood converted their breakfast nook into The Driving Crooner and now I must meet them and become friends with them.

My brain: "We've got some time off, should we deep-clean the office?" Me: "Sure. When should we start?" Brain: "The day before break ends." Me: "Um. Then we should do it in small sections so we can use the office if we don't finish." Brain: "No. We tear everything out and put it all over the floor."

As the year winds down, I realized that if I count my remaining time on this earth by our twice-yearly subscribe & save toilet paper deliveries, I've only got 90 more giant boxes of butt-wiping materials before I'm dead. Really makes you think.

Starting to feel like more work than it's worth, but currently trying every popular podcast app to see if there's a better fit for me. Becoming clear to me that what I don't like about the UI in Overcast and Castro pales in comparison to how poorly other apps handle just literally PLAYING AUDIO.

It has been 8 years since I shot with the original Leica Q, so finally receiving the Q3 43 was very exciting. Really missed Leica glass. Took it out for a spin over the weekend.

With the recent larger iOS and macOS updates, and with a personal laptop refresh, I decided to take the chance to try some alternative apps and attempted to go back to Apple Mail and Reminders instead of Mimestream and Things. Verdict: Nope. Experiment over.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle: I spent a thoroughly enjoyable several hours muttering "it should be in a museum!" to myself while bashing in the skulls of fascists with brooms and candlesticks and anything else I could find, so, yeah, good game so far.

This kind of notification is annoying and pointless (tapping it just opens the app with no additional UI or activity). There's no reason for me to ever open the app—I pay a monthly fee for call filtering regardless—so this is just abusive, stupid noise. Makes me want to cancel the service for spite.

Finished the finale of Superman & Lois, and, thus, the finale of all DC properties on the CW. 23 years of shows! Absolutely had its highs and lows, but was still a lot of fun for the past two decades. Superman & Lois was an especially well-made show, and I greatly enjoyed the past four seasons.

It's baffling how bad Verizon's 5G service is in Portland. 2024, and I still regularly have to toggle cellular to get data flowing, speeds are often a max of 3Mbps, and if I'm unlucky enough to hit a patch of Ultra Wideband I'll get a burst of speed and then literally no internet after.

I think my favorite feature of Bluesky is custom domain usernames and how easy they are to configure. Still think real-world verification is needed (not celebrity-style checks for VIPs but literally ID-based proof of identity for trustworthiness), but I do like how they’re using domains for this.

When Apple finally releases a new HomePod with a screen, it better have Apple Intelligence and actually work. For years we've been a HomePod house, but I still have an old Google Home Hub because it can actually answer interesting questions, unlike HomePod. My kids don't even bother with Siri.
