OK, looks like 3I/ATLAS is a comet! If it were an asteroid the image would be symmetric circles. The distortion is likely due to ices sublimating to form a gaseous tail.

If I have any writers following me, how on earth do you manage more than a thousand words in a day? I can push to 1500 on my best moments but I can’t think for the rest of the day.

About 50,000 years ago a 50 meter wide object burned a path through the Earths atmosphere, exploded just before impact and blasted a 1.2 km wide (3/4 mile) crater. I tried to include likely contemporary animals and plants. Airbrush and hand brush acrylics on gessoed stretched canvas.

Comet Tsuchinshan ATLAS on the night of October 14th! The tail extended 20 degrees visually, and the antitail barely passed 3. I’m still working on the DSLR shots, but this is accurate to the visual appearance.

Watched Europa enter Jupiter’s shadow today. Very cool to see the steep drop in brightness as it crossed the disk. Such a cool bit of geometry that Europa is hidden from the sun, but is still technically “visible” from our point of view!
