Unfortunately, genAI is still way too biased to be a good dialogue partner. You run the risk of it confirming your line of thinking, rather than challenging it (and all the while making you *think* it’s challenging you when it isn’t). The fact is what we have available to us now isn’t good enough.

You can tell that LotR was written by an academic because Gandalf disappears for like 20 years doing research to answer a single question.

AI is just scraping what already exists while historians are putting the materials of the past together in new and unexpected ways. Drawing on the insights, teaching, and ways of knowing that are intangible. No comparison.

Is there a Humanities-specific interest group pushing back against AI at University level? I think it’s important that this organisation exists to call out the permissible culture around AI and how in a generation that might absolutely destroy the soul of learning. Seriously. Or I’m gonna start it.

This. I was diagnosed with a chronic illness at age 7. My hips collapsed by the time I was 11 due to an adult dose of cortisone. The surgery to correct it was considered “elective” because I could still walk. My disability was constantly questioned until my hips got critical and had an extreme limp.
