Patrick Dane's final piece for This Week in Videogames was his 2025 Game of the Year list, which he tackled with great enthusiasm and excitement. As an avid follower of live-service games, he was eager to make sure the standout titles in the space this year received their due. Thank you, Patrick.

Our team are devastated by this news. Patrick was an incredibly kind, generous and talented person. He truly loved this industry, and was so excited to cover it every day. Patrick Dane, longtime games and entertainment journalist and News Editor at This Week in Videogames, has died in a motor vehicle accident. He was 34 years old.

Pat was stupid great kindness and big heartedness and I am devastated. For almost 10 years I was lucky enough to count him as a close friend, he always cared so deeply it was like being around the sun. I can’t believe I won’t get to hang out with my pal and chat about penguins and lore anymore

I couldn’t have asked for a better friend. The hole Pat leaves is immeasurable but I am so very thankful for the time we got to spend together. The warmth, positivity, and humour that he brought every day was nothing short of spectacular. I don’t have the words to describe how much I’ll miss him.

I've known Pat for a while, but over the last year, having accidentally gotten him and @olliecragg.bsky.social hooked on D&D, I had the pleasure of getting to know him a lot better and getting to talk to him daily and game multiple times a week.

Words can't even begin to describe this loss. Pat was a staple in my day to day. The constant Discord messages, him sending me whatever internet trend he was obsessed with at the moment, constantly trying to plan our next Destiny dungeon run, the list goes on...
