AI always calling your ideas “fantastic” can feel inauthentic, but what are sycophancy’s deeper harms? We find that in the common use case of seeking AI advice on interpersonal situations—specifically conflicts—sycophancy makes people feel more right & less willing to apologize.

By the way: all environments affect & shape our nervous systems. We are very “porous” creatures, enmeshed with the dynamics of our surroundings. Even traditional search interfaces shape our behavior & understanding of info. But current LLM bots confound our defenses in new, bad (insidious) ways.

One of my earliest memories is from kindergarden or somethin, the teacher telling me not to draw my 8's by drawing an S and then connecting it because it was the 'wrong way' to do it. I hadn't done it that way but when she said it I realized it was a really easy way to do it so I started doing that.

It's good to be home, where we can resume our traditional morning walks about the lake, watching for Ospreys, herons, and Red-winged Blackbirds, and enjoy the precious late spring sunshine that was so prevalent when I left. Oh wait, it'll be rainy again. Never mind. (Birds + Rain is fine too.)
