Great talk! I do feel like I speak Mandarin differently across time. And, tbh, as a "non-native English speaker" teacher, I always feel the pressure to change my English accent to be a little more "standard" or "white" especially after I work and live in an English-speaking country/region.

Everyone in academia knows that student course evaluations are biased against instructors who are women and/or people of color. We've known for decades. Study after study confirms the biases. Yet we still use them & weigh them heavily for tenure & promotion. Why?

I have learnt that rejection is sort of a normal thing in academia. My advisor told me that I should celebrate every "rejection" be it publication, job application, or anything else. This makes it so fun! Rejections won't be so scary. And and we are resilient!!

I went to an individual paper session at a conference last week. The presenter did a wonderful job of showcasing teacher participants’ language ideologies favoring native speakerism. During the Q&A session, an audience member commented — actually many Indians are native speakers. 🤔
