Not enough people are talking about this: Even before Trump cut off SNAP funding, he and Republicans in Congress made the biggest cuts to food assistance in U.S. history.

This Republican shutdown isn’t about responsible governance. It’s about cruelty and control — and a president who treats hunger as a weapon against his own people.

The lesson of history is that tyrants cannot be appeased. Appeasement only feeds their insatiable hunger for power. Tyrants prey on people who feel unsafe and vulnerable. But without mass submission, a tyrant is powerless. Remember this.

To people comparing Mamdani to Obama, because young, charismatic: Back then, Obama was ready to sell out, backed by the Chicago political machine. Today's generation, especially in NYC, progressives are militant. Mamdani is beholden to grassroots power. Selling out is self-destruction.

Dick Cheney was a cruel bureaucrat who made corrupt institutions more abusive. Officials in those institutions then surrendered what was left of their morals to accommodate his evil vision. In time, those institutions became even more corrupt. What politicians say today will be revealing of the rot.

Trump's USDA is ordering grocery stores to follow a federal rule outlawing them from giving discounts to SNAP recipients whose benefits are currently frozen illegally. So Trump's happy to finally follow the law as long as long as he can inflict pain and cruelty? Got it.

The 400 richest Americans are now worth a record $6.6 trillion. The entire bottom 50% of America is worth just $4.2 trillion. Read that back. When 400 people control more wealth than half a country’s population, we have a very serious problem.

Let's be clear: Trump has the funding to keep SNAP running. He's choosing not to. There's even a Republican-led bill to fund SNAP with broad Democratic support. Republican leaders won't let us vote on it. Deliberately choosing to let families starve is as vindictive as it gets.

An estimated 15.7 million workers use SNAP. It’s a lifeline for those in low-wage jobs. Meanwhile, CEOs are paid 280x as much as the typical worker. Don’t be angry at workers for using food stamps. Be angry at the corporations paying them so little that they need them.

On Saturday, millions of Americans, including children, could go hungry because the federal government wants to illegally suspend SNAP benefits during the shutdown. We're suing. The USDA has funds to stop people from starving, but instead it's playing politics. It's wrong.

Whenever people complain about the number of folks relying on food stamps, it is worth reminding them that SNAP is, by too large of a degree, a subsidy for corporations that refuse to pay a living wage and their political allies who reject public policy prescriptions to reduce income inequality.
