I do lot of stuff on the stage, and if there was a tool that would allow me to bypass the rehearsal process and go straight to the performance, I wouldn't use it. In fact, if I had to pick either no rehearsal or no performance, I'd pick no performance. For some of us, the "rehearsal" is the point.

I'm co-facilitating a learning community this year & one of the profs off-handedly mentioned how they've tried to make their course as tech-free as possible. Which is not a new idea, but it's interesting because of WHO said it. It wasn't someone who never learned tech tools in the 1st place ...

So, I made it through the beginning of the school year as a new (unplanned) executive director, through a catastrophic hurricane and its lingering effects, and through my last conference directing, all without a migraine. It seems the election was the straw that broke the camel's back, though ...

I get that compliance can be a useful tool in maintaining access so good work can continue. But compliance becomes complicity much faster than we think. And I'm pretty sure no one realizes they've made the switch until it's too late.

I don't care about sportsball but people in my life do, so basketball brackets: engaged! I did one based on the relative sassiness of the mascots (which involved MANY google image searches). And another based on the aesthetics of university homepages (many more searches). Obviously, I will win. 😆

I opened applications for our summer Course ReDesign institute 24 hours ago. We've got competition this year as others are starting to follow both our timing and compensation models. Good, but also 😳 Well, I just checked and we already have 20 applicants, including representation from all colleges!

I will never understand people who dump on “grade grubbing” students. Grade grubbing is a very logical reaction to the very illogical system that students are subjected to.

And with that, I just submitted my last set of grades EVER for the Intro to School Psych course I've taught for 10 years. I have one more course to teach in that grad program in the Spring, and then I am shifting over fully to ed dev and teaching first-year seminars. What a ride!

I am obsessed with students who write in their real voices. Who literally type stuff like "Oops, we are now 2 pages in and I am going to finally address the prompt." It's such a joyful validation of my approach, because they wouldn't be so real if they were afraid I'd penalize them for it.

I was talking through a frustration with a good friend yesterday, and she said such a good thing: “Capitalism depends on misalignment. It requires that people are unaware of misalignments between values and behaviors and that they push ahead anyways.” 🙌🏻

In my 1st semester of college teaching, I taught a selected topics course on stuff I know about. To my complete surprise, the students were *deeply affected* by it & told me their lives would have been different if they had taken that class as a freshman. Capitalist productivity culture is a trip y'all. I've spent the whole morning preparing data from a student well-being survey that my research lab will use in a thematic analysis later today. Students using real data to learn skills. Producing a real analysis to help programs improve teaching. 1/2
