Watching NO HOLDS BARRED reminded me both of the transgressive films of Lloyd Kaufman and Norman Apstein's ICE CREAM MAN, a very confused film made by a porn director who lost all sense of what was appropriate for a mainstream exploitation film after years making some of the most bizarre XXX videos.

Beyond his appearance in our Gene Hackman episode, we've actually devoted one full episode to a Ted Kotcheff movie when @kennethwreid.bsky.social joined us to talk about FIRST BLOOD (and RUCKUS, the FIRST BLOOD rip-off that managed to come out before FIRST BLOOD).

I highly recommend Kotcheff's very entertaining memoir, DIRECTOR'S CUT and if you're looking for something of his you might not have seen, I recommend his original version of FUN WITH DICK & JANE which I find fascinating because Kotcheff goes out of his way to make his hero an unlikeable asshole.

Sadly it now appears that our new ep celebrating Gene Hackman is now also a tribute to the now passed Canadian director Ted Kotcheff as well. In the episode, James talks about UNCOMMON VALOR and we start the conversation by riffing on how wonderfully and weirdly diverse Kotcheff's filmography was.

Love this. I always roll my eyes at the argument sex in movies has to be necessary for the plot for two big reasons: 1) Seeing people have sex is fun and doesn't need to be justified 2) Movies are not plot-servicing machines and it is extremely limiting to only think of them in that way
