A little treat going into the weekend: the midterm for my quantum mechanics class was a couple weeks ago, and again the students made memes for extra credit. Let's start out strong with a PSA about the dangers of nondegenerate perturbation theory. Do you know where your good states are?

🍎🎢 I try to train my students to *never* hand me any paper, *always* use the turn-in bin. Today a student handed me his quiz, & I thought “You can do this, Mr. Freeman, just walk straight over to the turn-in bin” Peer grading 10 min later, quiz not in bin. Spent the rest of the day looking. (1/2)

I was at my old high school today, for the first time in over twenty years, to talk to the teachers about how their curriculum can better support students. AI came up, and so many teachers were saying "Well it's a tool, they have to know how to use it, it's the future so we have to accept it!"

Made a couple small changes to my potential energy function U(x) simulation: tangent line now doesn't change size as much, removed a bug in the velocity display, added "reverse" and "return" buttons into the main graph area. Same link:

Update: It appears that this question was in fact not thrown out? No scoring commentary yet, but 2 points for a dimensional analysis question in which the dimensions don’t make sense 😑🎢 Link to scoring guideline:

I like how the prompt on a lot of these--after the setup--starts with "Tell me, whoever wishes..." and then the question itself. Some are simple arithmetic, but q1 is dimensional analysis (might steal it) and q5 is a linear combination with three variables!

In 2001, Sadler and Tai’s paper “Success in Introductory College Physics: The Role of High School Preparation” noted that a variable that seemed to correlate to higher grades in college physics was “using no textbook at all or reading it less.”

I think this is video on inflation is an all-time Hossenfelder moment. It's a beautiful illustration of how poorly her philosophy of science works and why she fights against progress every step of the way, to champion it only when it finally succeeds. It deserves a breakdown 🧵
