Trans people are facing a genocide. But communities under attack survive those who want us dead every single day. Queer communities survived genocides within living memory. We care for each other. We create. We defy. We fight. No tyrant is invincible. Trans existence is.

If you're trans, we *always* understand if you're not in a place to read articles like this. Investigating, writing and editing them is often difficult for us too. Cis folks? These are the realities we live with and we need you to face that.

Trans people face incarcerarion at horrific rates due to a status quo that seeks our destruction. TNN is committed to confronting that, something establishment queer media too often ignore. This shouldn't lead to despair. We always have context about how people fight back, because they always do.

i can confirm. every single person here has a story about preparing for this, seeing it happen, knowing people affected, or organizing in response. every time i hear a loud bang outside or a siren, im terrified that it'll be ICE. i check every single time.

Two trans women have faced torture, bigotry and horrific conditions since arrested as part of the infamous Prairieland crackdown on anti-ICE protest. They tell TNN about surviving behind bars, as @thefreeradical.org delves into the absurd attack on "antifa" that's just about criminalizing dissent:

I think about this a lot, especially as part of communities where a lot of people die due to injustice. Our enemies go to a lot of effort to deter open expressions of grief, rage and memory. Because these things are a threat to their power.

There's a lot of issues with the myths around nonviolence and protest. A big one is that they erase the actual history of the civil rights movement — complex coalitions whose struggles and strategies are vital to understand — into a whitewashed saintliness that gentry liberals are comfortable with.

As people mobilize around the country, beware of claims that a sanitized version of "nonviolence" — passive, compliant and non-disruptive — is the only option. As @thefreeradical.org detailed in-depth, these myths are based on bad history and social science. They're meant to serve the status quo.

Yesterday, I attended the vigil for Renee Good, the woman murdered by an ICE agent for daring to try and protect her neighbors. This vigil, which had thousands upon thousands of people, gave me hope I never had before for the future of activism. I wanna talk about it. 🧵

weaponizing "male socialization" against trans women isn't just hurtful because it's transphobia. it's hurtful because it weaponizes the tool of the patriarchy against its greatest victim--the women who have defied patriarchy's definitions of gender the most out of anyone.

Credit where due to the Lemkin Institute, which has consisently sounded the alarm about the threat of trans genocide and taken trans communities' warnings seriously. Far more could learn from that example.

reminder McBride's first bill was to deregulate private equity sponsored by an anti trans Republican the continued whitewashing of her actions because she made a few statements that are the bare minimum for supporting trans people as any politician is gross

Nothing like defending your anti-trans bias by reiterating your bias. One thing that’s true: Sulzberger’s nyt has “fiercely contested” evidence of our existence.

Major parts of HB805, NC's draconian anti-trans law, just went into effect. In August @davidforbes.bsky.social wrote about how that law (and another targeting trans youth in foster care) passed due to Dem support, how that fit a history of betrayal and why trans folks shouldn't trust politicians:

If pressuring politicians is a route you're going, remember the nice way always fails. They only act in non-horrible ways when they're afraid of the alternative. The push against the trans medicaid ban last year worked because people got angry and targeted Dems rather than flattering them.

Everything is infuriating and the people in charge are irrevocably evil.

While working on this piece, I couldn't forget the wave of harassment trans journalists got here mid-2024 when we spoke up about the NYT's transphobia and the complicity of major figures there. We need a lot less reverence for institutions, and a lot more listening to folks on the front lines.

One of the important take aways of this interview is its demonstration of how science journalism can deceive or misguide wrt to what scientific consensus is, and the concomitant malign poltical ends that misdirection can promote

One aspect I observed early about local governments was that "progressive" officials repeatedly hired hyper-conservative city/county managers and attorneys (and defended them, when people got angry) then threw up their hands and said they were powerless to do anything. I think about that a lot.
