Spent some time on dialog sequencing today. Added an ID system to link scene objects to scriptable objects, making them easy to reference in dialog etc. Also some quality of life stuff: a quick “Add Opposite Dialog” shortcut and hid extra params in foldouts.

Unity Devs: How do you organize your scene hierarchies in Unity? Talking about Environments/Props. I don't really want to group everything. Do y'all use those scene hierarchy plugins that make fake folders? Do you make =====NPCS===== header gameobjects? Something else? TELL ME!

I've decided to keep both dialog bubbles and the text box. Figure they'll be useful in different contexts. That's enough time working on Dialog UI, time to get back to ... gameplay? art? level design? 🤔

Working on a 'bubble' version of the dialog player UI. I got positioning + screen clamping working. Next up will be the 'stem' graphic and placement. Maybe some padding.

We ran a randomized controlled trial to see how much AI coding tools speed up experienced open-source developers. The results surprised us: Developers thought they were 20% faster with AI tools, but they were actually 19% slower when they had access to AI than when they didn't.

It's been a little while! I have been adding a health bar, as well as items and food that you can eat to heal. There's a whole Item Manager / ID / Pooling thing too, but that's hard to show in a video.

Oh, finally got respawn working properly too!

Put together a simple scene loader + transition + checkpoint saving setup. Now we can wander between scenes with the right entry/exit points, and even load into a save game in the right place.

Made a little editor thing that lets me read/write parameters from another script directly in animation states. The fields don't actually exist in the animator state. Neat and hopefully not confusing later, haha.

Bringing back some of the level toys that I had in the previous project. Jump pads, and "Turn to Operate" physics objects. Starting to see the fun return.

Learning how to use GraphView and trying to put some of my Dialog system in it. Great to have nodes here!! But... this is getting out of scope quickly. There are also some quirks and gotchas. Going to abandon this, I don't even need branching dialog for the next few projects 😜

I did the whole custom c# FSM thing and it worked, and that's why I'm 💯 guilt-free about going back to Animator based state machines for my kit. They're so much simpler, and them being directly tied to animation is a plus (not a minus) for me!

Nothing too fun to show this week. I switched my character commands from Interfaces to scriptable objects, and added commands to the dialog system. Now I can run commands on characters via dialog lines (EG: Play animation, look at something, move, interact with x, etc). Lots of refactoring too.

Do I know anyone on here who has released a Steam game as a 'Sole Proprietor/Owner' instead of as a 'Company'? I have questions! 😄
