As I shift focus within AI for marketing, I just wanted to look back at why AI for video marketing hasn’t panned out the way I thought it would. (Or, at least, hasn’t panned out yet!) I think it’s two things —  1. Tech  2. Market

AI ADS SHOULD NOT MEAN "SHILLING AVATARS" I can't emphasize this enough. It's been wild to watch how many AI companies have been pitching generated spokespeople in your ads. This is awful. Consumers are craving realness. Consumers can tell. You're burning through your brand equity.

It’s very odd to be touching both AI and ecommerce professionally at the moment. Where, the first is on a once-in-a-lifetime swing up and the second is in the middle of a collapse that could easily become worse than 2020. truly a 🎢

Open-source AI is very complicated. It's easier to understand how to kill it than to make it flourish. We need to invest if we want it to stick around. Making the U.S. the home for open-source AI Open-source AI is here to stay, but it is not a given that it will be American.

Everything in a startup is uncertain, except your own sense of good craft. Lean into the craft. Do what the business needs (eg marketing, not more features). That’s what you control.

Heard from inside the National Cancer Institute, part of NIH — travel through April is canceled. Purchasing with government card is frozen. All public comms are off limits. Can’t even submit abstracts to future meetings. Can’t submit *manuscripts* for publication. All hiring activity frozen. Fuck.

I can’t tell yet if the strength of the Chinese open-source AI ecosystem a part of a deliberate “Belt and Road Initiative” to make Chinese companies be at the center of AI going forward — or more accidental. But, it looks like an incredibly effective strategy.

Watching all the tech titans at the inauguration today reminded me of Moscow in the early 2000s. Washington for the next 4 years will be swimming in cash — as everything is for sale: Executive orders, government contracts, small innocent-looking paragraphs added to legislation, tariffs, pardons…

I know this sounds really unreasonable, but maybe congress could pass a real data privacy law and then it would be safe to use apps even if their owners were maybe a little malicious.

I like how Anthropic separates the definitions between AI Workflows and Agents. Most of what is launching in market today that's being called "agents" are Workflows. And they are great. I wish people would just call them that :-)
