Time to start work on book 24. #writing

The Embers of War series is still one of the best sci fi series I've ever read.

Since 2018, I have published 6 novels and 1 short story collection with @titanbooks.bsky.social, some of which have been translated into numerous other languages and been finalists for numerous awards. And there's another novel coming in February next year... Find out more via the link in my bio.

It's been a long ass day, but it was pleasant to end it with some intellectual conversation.

Got tired of being a hermit, so browsed the local secondhand bookshop and then took myself out for lunch at a seafront cafe.

Proof of life. With all three of my 2025 book releases now out in the world, I'm looking ahead to my next novel, Jitterbug, which comes out in February - and beyond, to whatever comes after that.

Rereading “Embers of War” by @garethlpowell.bsky.social. It is an excellent military SF/space opera story that has stuck with me since I first read it. And it’s time to reread and read the sequels.

I've had three books published this year, and we're only 5 months away from the publication of the next one in February 2026. Plus, I have four older novels due to be reprinted, a fully written novel out on submission, and two more in various stages of completion. And I've edited two anthologies.

As a six or seven year old, the Fantastic Four were my first introduction to Marvel, and to superhero comics. So, I'm pleased to say I enjoyed the movie and its whole 1960s retro-futuristic vibe.

A customer just came into the shop and bought 12 books for her friend’s birthday. She’s going to wrap them individually and write a different month of the year on each one, so her friend has a new book to read every month until her next birthday. And I think that’s just the most thoughtful gift.

Just signed a copy of my novel STARS AND BONES for a customer after he picked it up and informed me, “He’s a local author, you know.” “More local than you realise,” I said.

In the bookshop this morning: customers drinking cappuccinos, the machine hissing and grumbling, sunshine streaming in through the windows.

A deliciously bright and crisp autumn morning. After the drowse of summer, my thoughts feel sharper and the world more in focus.

Listening to Mozart in the bookshop this morning, and thinking about the audacity of an artist who creates a piece of art that needs 70 to 100 skilled musicians and a special hall to be constructed in which to listen to it.

Happy Autumn Exquinox. I saw my breath misting in the air on the way to the bookshop this morning, and horse chestnuts weighing down the branches of the trees with the crispy brown leaves. The page has turned and a new season has begun.

It's fun when you say something on a panel and your fellow writers go 'ooh, I like that'. We were discussing tropes and I said awareness of the classic story elements matters because we grow up with them so they influence us subconsciously. 'Tropes are the background radiation of our creativity.'
