Talked before this game about how important the midfield battle was going to be. Right now, Olivia Moultrie and Sam Coffey (10 goals/5 assists this year) have fewer touches combined (48) than Leicy Santos has on her own (53).

This is a very fun game so far for this fan of the NWSL, the Spirit, good tactics, and good individual play.

Swanson, Ertz, Mewis, Heath, Chawinga, Zaneratto, Lavelle, probably forgetting a few. There are too many receipts for me at this point. I know he's a nice man, but he plays too loose with injuries, especially in tournament play.

Impressive first half from Gotham FC. They're not only controlling the middle of the pitch, but their defensive structure is very impressive. KC is so dangerous on the counter, even without Temwa. The Howell-Carter-Sonnett performance has allowed the midfield dominance.

Add that Berger save to the incredible moments from this NWSL post-season (Marta run, Kingsbury wall). This KC-Gotham game has the potential to be the highlight of the weekend, as does Thorns-Wave later.

Additional evidence against deep Heaps is the way circles are being run around her and we are a little exposed BTL as a result. That noted they also hooped Coffey out of the game in some portions too, so there was overall setup problems as well

USWNT aren't playing the doomed Vlatko 433 that operated as a 4105, but they're choosing one similar element from that: fullbacks high and tucking in, rather than either providing width. Cooper & Thompson are wider, as Hayes has chosen a 5v4 overload centrally over creating 2v1s on the flanks.

USWNT starting XI: 6 USA, 5 Europe. Haven’t seen that in a while. Patterson at (presumably) LB seems a good way to get your best players on the pitch. Macario and Lavelle (and, let’s be honest, Heaps whenever she wants) central is not much speed. Forces Cooper & AT to attack edges/endline fast.
