I've been digesting the court ruling and here are the implications for Europe. The 'reciprocal' tariffs are out, so no more 10 per cent general tariff for all countries. Sectoral tariffs on autos and steel/aluminum still in place so this doesn't affect the US-UK 'deal'. For the EU though..1/x

My take on today's US court tariff ruling. This is an excellent opportunity for the EU and other trading partners to quit preparing packages of concessions, tell Trump to shove it and get on with trading without the US. First 300 clicks free. It being 3.42am here in London, I am now going to bed.

Remember Trump is using emergency legislation for the tariffs. So the measures that were urgent and necessary to meet that emergency have now suddenly become non-urgent and unnecessary. If US congress and courts properly held president to account for misuse of emergency powers, this would matter.

If countries retaliate, the rate goes up. If countries cooperate "take significant steps to remedy non-reciprocal trade arrangements and align sufficiently with the United States on economic and national security matters," tariffs may go down. It's like a Unilateral Mar-A-Lago Accord.

I taught international environmental law to professionals today and … no one said ‚climate change is a hoax‘, everybody agreed that what we leave to future generations matters, and discussions were evidence-based and learning-oriented. This is Switzerland. This is no longer self-evident.

One thing that is clear from these headlines is that the big news orgs don't have a vocabulary or strategy for how to report to readers when the President claims to do something he not only lacks authority to do but even the power to do. That's a very basic, foundational thing.
