Recent programming experience has me thinking that the divide between I/O and compute should extend to languages. You want Erlang-style observability, concurrency, lightness for the I/O part, and Rust-style correctness and performance for the compute part. These don’t need to be the same language!

In English, I always used "tool," a noun, to describe my work, whereas in Portuguese, it isn't a strong enough component of everyday language and so I defer to "construção," a verb. Even worse than trying to read something behind a paywall, I can't imagine writing something and having it hidden to a potential reader. Just shoots oneself in the foot.

dmenu is pretty awesome—cat a file for a list of bookmarks, show a selection menu with fuzzy matching, and then open the selection in the browser. First time I've used a proper UI component inside of a bash/unix pipe workflow.

At Heroku, we basically destroyed a generation of folks personal projects when we deprecated various free plans. (My own software died too.) Now Glitch is making the hard decision to do the same: blog.glitch.com/post/changes... The lesson is simple: don't build in the cloud if you want it to last.
