Gave INLAND EMPIRE my first and only 10 on my blog a couple Aprils ago when I rewatched it for the first time in more than a dozen years and realized that every aspect of my taste, sensibility, way of thinking about and processing art was shaped by it, and most of his other movies aren’t far behind.

Working through an endless 3D due diligence list and it’s only becoming harder to tell how much I like many of these. Eg. Journey to the Center of the Earth: Some of the worst images / best depth in the 2000s wave. An utter insult to physics. A true post-Spy Kids 3D product. Ugly, dumb, and pure.

Finally well enough to catch one of @astrostic.bsky.social fantastic 3-D programs TIFF: The Treasure of the Four Crowns. One of the best 3-D experiences I've had, in no small part for the imaginative use of animal protrusions.

Toronto! Tickets are still available for tonight's Lightbox screening of JACKASS 3D, which is one of the greatest cinematic experiences you can have with a crowd. Seriously.

Just announced this morning, I’ve been invited to curate a 3D screening at IFFR (Rotterdam), called “Cinema of the Spectacles.” 7 films (ALL projected from 16mm prints), 5 different 3D formats, 4 types of glasses. Happening on February 4.

per Lobster, the films after Arrival of a Train "are Louis Lumière's relief tests. These are family views." I'm logging them as untitled for now, but will keep searching for clarity on these (and Lumière's* other 3D experiments). *Auguste wasn't interested in 3D. Stereoscopy was Louis's passion.

Still waiting to hear back, but I did find an account of Lumière's 3D presentation at the 1935 French Academy of Sciences saying he showed the Train remake as well as a comedy called L’Ami de Monsieur and a "documentary" called Sur la Riviera (possible the latter is the one we saw shot on a boat)

Tonight’s “Dimensional Excursions” screening pairs one of my top 10 fave 3D features with one of my top 10 fave movies of any length or format. The hits just keep on coming. tiff.net/events/flesh...

The DCP for L’Arrivée d’un Train 3D ended up including (all?) the other films the Lumières made in 3D, none of which I’d seen before (don’t know the titles, if they even have titles?). We decided to screen all of them instead of stopping after Train. Cinema peaked in those 6 minutes.

What a cool series! Nobody in Toronto knows more or has thought more deeply and imaginatively about 3-D than @astrostic.bsky.social. This series is not to be missed! (I saw a 3-D version of Arrivée d'un train in Paris a decade ago and it rocks.) tiff.net/calendar?ser...
