I agree in general. In very broad strokes: If you wanna be complex: own it. Cut the crap with the broad appeal then. Can't have it both ways. If you want broader appeal: look at Smash, Gang Beasts,etc. Traditional fighters too, but lean hard on game feel for all. Either way: IT'S NICHE AF!

Look. I've worked on the second type of games A LOT. You may not get the depth/complexity/high ceiling you want. But you get a lot of people moving quicker from button mashing to playing ~with intent~ and feeling good about themselves because they "get" why their strats "worked" faster.

I think I may write a blog post about some fg thoughts as of late... tho lately it doesn't feel worth it and there is a level of "burn tland salt the earth and start over" with the genre but I will try and be more upbeat

One of many posts I've seen over fg discourse lately is like..."make games for people who like them" and sort of the interesting notion of...what would a casual fighter versus a pro fighter look like? What features would be in one over the other, what audience sizes / budget?

Sometimes I try to make tools to make a task easier but the tool is so daunting that sometimes it's really not worth it...

I've contemplated the notion of in game coaching to some degree but that is def. a AAA fighter thing to solve as it feels like an implementation nightmare - for a small team anyway. With all the stuff Tekken 8 has, it'd probably be more doable.

Fighting game dev has a lot of issues for a variety of reasons but...from a dreamer perspective, it's a rather constrained genre...and the content is the big overarching demand.

The amount of times I sit in a call with a dreamer and their dream game is basically "everything from my favorite six games smashed together into perfect harmony and there was endless flawless content and it has graphics everyone likes" and I have to explain that making feet go on stairs is hard
