Exactly right. The lottery heritage fund,
@historicengland.bsky.social
and all involved with the Iron Duke treated publicans appallingly and chose a duo who own burger bars to run this historic public house. Costing 2.5 million of public money.

This is all marvellous but a shame that Historic England listing doesn't necessarily save the heritage & function of a pub, even when vast public resources have been used to save the building, as in the Art Deco masterpiece the Iron Duke.

The majestic Wells Cathedral in all its splendor. The Scissor Arches you see were built in 1348 The cathedralâs central tower had been completed by 1313, but its weight caused foundation shifts. To prevent collapse, they designed the arches as a bracing system to redistribute the towerâs weight.

Did you see the Council quote in a press article, 94% wanted a pub with food, only 4% wanted a wet led pub? What a cynical manipulation of Qs & outcomes. Everyone wanted a pub of that size to do food, just not Zaks.
