Despite everything that's happened, the Red Sox are currently only one game below the playoff cutline. If the season ended today the AL would have two playoff teams with losing records. The Mariners (19-20) and the Tigers (18-21).

Yandy Diaz logged his 1,000th career hit tonight (his 134 wRC+ is the highest in franchise history), while Junior Caminero had a 449-foot, 114.3-exit veto bomb. The Rays have the most sacrifice hits, and fourth-most bunt hits in MLB, but it's not all small-ball.

Ranger Suarez not coming out for the fifth inning is more than eyebrow-raising. It is anxiety-inducing, and potentially yet another blow to a team for which little has gone right this season.

Despite his having thrown just 13-and-a-third innings — all scoreless — Mason Miller has a 1.16 WPA, second best among NL pitchers, and 1.0 WAR, tied for third highest. He leads MLB in saves (10), has allowed just five baserunners, and has 27 strikeouts to go with a 61.4% K-rate.

It is obviously way too early to consider Cy Young-worthiness, but Cam Schlittler leads AL starters in both WAR and FIP, and he has a higher strikeout rate than Tarik Skubal and José Soriano, who are likewise off to stellar starts. Schlittler also has a paltry 1.01% walk rate.

Mentioned in my recent Luke Stevenson feature that Mickey Cochrane’s career .419 OBP is the highest for a catcher in MLB history. Another Cochrane note: In 1932, the HoF backstop had 23 home runs, 22 strikeouts, and 100 walks while playing for the Philadelphia A’s.

Listening to a variety of radio games, as I'm wont to do, I have been reminded early this season that Ken Korach is among the best of the best. Athletics fans are burdened by having one of sports' worst owners, but they do have a great play-by-play broadcaster.
