Flaherty had a better season last year and lingered on FA market until Tigers signed him just before spring training. Still, he could’ve opted out in hopes of getting a qualifying offer from Tigers worth $22,025,000. Instead, he takes the sure deal and avoids the suspense.

This is now official, though Tigers are terming it as Flaherty exercising his optIon to return. Regardless, Flaherty is staying with the Tigers for next season. He’ll make $20 million thanks to a incentive clause that kicked in when he made 15 starts this season.

Tarik Skubal has again been named Tiger of the Year by the Detroit chapter of the BBWAA. He’s the first pitcher to win back-to-back since Denny McLain in 1968 and ‘69. Skubal received 20 of 23 first-place votes. Dillon Dingler, Riley Greene and Kerry Carpenter received one vote each.

To cap his day, Kevin McGonigle centered a 99 mph fastball and sent it 424 feet to CF for a go-ahead two-run HR in the 10th, his second HR in three days.
