Congratulations to our labs latest PhD graduate, Debotri Chatterjee who successfully defended her thesis entitled “Induction of Parkinsonism Pathology by Different Strains of SARS-CoV-2 in mice”. Now onto the final 2 years of medical school.

Our lab is looking for a self motivated postdoc to examine the role of infections in the brain, with a particular focus on induction and progression of parkinsonian pathology. The ideal candidate will have experience in immunology/virology. Although a background in neuroscience will be helpful.

Had a valuable zoom talk with @daniellebeckman.bsky.social on future collaborations examine the role of viruses in the etiology and progression of Parkinson’s disease. Lots of good ideas bantered back and forth. Hopefully will lead to new and exciting research.

On my way to NYC for T-Cells in the Brain symposium at Columbia University. Let’s just combine the complexities of the nervous system with the immune system for 2 days of fun.

I am giving a talk at our translational research retreat for our Farber Neurological Institute this afternoon on the role of viruses in Parkinson’s disease. Historically I link to the 1918 flu pandemic. Regarding mitigation, nothing has changed (look at dates on slide).

Two papers accepted with moderate revisions this week. An early holiday present was that the reviewers of both papers gave insightful and helpful comments that will in the end make them better. Usually I complain (b**tch) about the comments but spent our holiday lunch complementing their comments.

If an #H5N1 pandemic starts tomorrow or in three months, there will be little mystery as to how it happened. The conditions are all there. They have been for a while. Our preprint discussing the parkinsonian impact of two strains of COVID, how this is affected by vaccination and how carrying a LRRK2 mutation worsens pathology and escapes vaccine protection has just posted. The implications of this on public health are significant. biorxiv.org/cgi/content/...

Heads up for our preprint of our studies showing effects of alpha and omicron strains of SARS-CoV-2 on the basal ganglia and how the immune response to this infection is dysregulated in mice carrying the G2919S LRRK2. Also LRRK2 mice do not fully respond to mRNA vaccine but do to a protein vaccine.

With COVID still soaring, flu season in progress and a potential series of mutations making transmission of H5N1 more likely why am I (and maybe 5%of others) still the only ones masking on public transit. I just am perplexed.

What is scary is how quickly our lab’s papers on the neurological effects of the H5N1 virus are starting to be rediscovered. The A/VN/1203/04 strain was bad. Mammalian brains with this strain seem to be worse off based on some slides I have seen.
