This whole thread! It’s conspicuous how little empathy Alastor gets vs Vox, even from supposed fans of him His background does so much to make sense of his personality and worldview, but many people seem to still insist on treating him like he‘s just irredeemably evil, for no reason at all

but then they refuse to give a shred of that empathy to Alastor and insist him being black doesn’t matter or factor into character analysis of him when it absolutely does.

Why must we dismiss Alastor’s race at every turn and claim it’s irrelevant? A big reason I decided to make this thread is bc I see a lot of ppl acknowledge Vox’s complexity as a repressed man from the 50s and express empathy for him, which isn’t wrong.—

he refuses to call him partner bc of that experience and his internalized homophobia. It doesn’t matter that everyone fucks everyone in hell or that homophobia doesn’t play a big systemic role in hells hierarchy. It’s still a thing Vox struggles with from life.—

Now Alastor didn’t reject Vox because he was bi, but Vox being a bi man with internalized homophobia, made this cruel rejection so much worse in his mind. This will be something that affects him for the next 70 years, even as he comes to embrace his sexuality more with Val—

And this is something he carried with him to hell(as confirmed by Viv). He meets Alastor and develops feelings for him and decides to be vulnerable, resulting in Alastor rejecting him very harshly and laughing at him.—

Vox being a white man from the 50s had a much easier time climbing up the ranks and getting away with his crimes than Alastor did in life, but he was still a repressed bisexual man who lived in a very homophobic time that could end up being dangerous for him.—

You can make the argument that human standard sexism, homophobia, and racism don’t play as big of a role in hell on a systematic level, but it’s still present in the world and within the characters and affects them. Vox is a good example of this.—

These characters were once human and lived in a bigoted world, why wouldn’t some of that transfer over to hell when they died? Not to mention the hellborn also have their own from of racism and supremacy.—

Hell is a bigoted place. We see characters being sexist, racist, and homophobic all the time in these shows. Sure, it’s mostly played for laughs, but it doesn’t change the fact that real life bigotry DOES exist in this universe and why wouldn’t it?—

They are, again, this is a cycle, this is him desperately trying to gain a sense of control back at the expense of other ppl like him. This isn’t a justification, but a bit of an explanation. Now let’s take a break from talking about Alastor and talk about the hellaverse itself.—

Despite knowing how bad this feels, despite hating it, Alastor repeats these behaviors with Husk, another black character, in an even harsher way. He dimisses him, he calls him a pet, and puts him on a chain to show their power imbalance. Do we really think these aren’t related to eachother?—

Their race is always relevant. Similarly, Alastor made a deal with Rosie to get ahead in hell in a way he never could in life. For his entire afterlife she’s treated him like a pet, she dehumanizes him, she dismisses him, she puts him in cages and on puppet strings.—

Characters like Erik Killmonger and Louis de Pointe du Lac are also black characters who face racial discrimination and injustice and detest it, it motivates them, but then they kill or harm other black ppl for their own selfish reasons and/or Agendas, which is the point.—

It doesn’t mean he’s right, it doesn’t mean he’s justified, and it doesn’t mean he’s an activist. It’s simply the truth, him being a powerful demon now doesn’t change or erase that he was born a black man and how that affects him and how he sees ppl in current day.—

But that still does not change the fact that he LIVED as a black man in the Jim Crow south and that fundamentally shaped how he views and moves throughout the world and how his experiences are a big part of why he wanted this status in the first place.—

He is subjecting other ppl(mostly ppl with power) to the same things HE’S been subjected to in order to gain a sense of control back and finally feel superior, to be on top. Now that he has power, he’s gonna enjoy it and not let it go. He has become the oppressor.—

His need for control, to be superior, to be the strongest doesn’t stem from no where. A big part of it stems from him being denied autonomy bc of who he was at the time period he lived in. He is in a cycle of abuse.—
